FC Cincinnati vs DC United recap
Cincinnati- FC Cincinnati defeated D.C United 2-1 on Saturday, in front of an electric sellout
crowd that consisted of 25,513 fans, the fifth sellout of the season. Pat Noonan and FC
Cincinnati picked up their 7 th win of the season, while improving to (6-0-0) on their home turf to
start the 2023 season.
DC United has had FC Cincinnati’s number in the past as they entered tonight’s contest 4-1-3 in
the all-time series before FC Cincinnati picked up their first win vs DC United at home since
joining the MLS back in 2019. FC Cincinnati now remains tied for first place with New England
Revolution within the Eastern Conference following their victory improving to 7-1-3 (24 points)
on the season.
FC Cincinnati would look to control the tempo in the early minutes, after a flurry of head balls in
the box there in the 14 th minute as they looked to strike early before DC United goalkeeper
Tyler Miller, made 3 incredible saves on three head balls in the box. FC Cincinnati would have
another huge opportunity in the 34 th minute after DC United goalkeeper Tyler Miller raced all
the way to midfield in high pursuit of Alvaro Barreal, leaving the DC United net wide open, but
FC Cincinnati just couldn’t take advantage of that situation early in the first half.
However, it was all DC United from there after putting up 6 shots on goal in the opening 50
minutes, (45 min +5 minutes extra time in the first half. DC United would then look to bring the
pressure from all angels despite a quick start for FC Cincinnati in the early minutes. FC
Cincinnati goalkeeper Roman Celentano would record 3 saves on 6 DC United shot attempts in
the first half, cementing his name into FC Cincinnati history surpassing Przemyslaw Tyton’s
all-time saves record of 115.
FC Cincinnati would strike first in the 59 th minute, after a DC United foul set up a
Luciano Acosta Corner kick. Acosta would slice a beautiful strike from the corner that
would find the back of the net for an Olimpco goal, a feat you don’t see often in the sport
of soccer.
FC Cincinnati wasted no time shortly after, extending their lead after getting after
Midfielder Alvaro Barreal slipped DC United’s defense on the assist from Luciano
Acosta, to score his first goal of the season. A goal that meant the world to Acosta as
his father was in attendance for the first time as a member of FC Cincinnati.
“That was maybe one of the best goals of my career. It felt good, I looked over
and caught my dad in the stands, it was incredible.” Alvaro Barreal said following
FC Cincinnati’s 2-1 victory.
DC United would get one back in the 90 th minute following a Taxiarchis Fountes right
footed goal, assisted off a DC United corner kick.
However, FC Cincinnati forward Brenner, would go down in extra time of the second half
with a foot injury right before the final whistle. Brenner, was assisted off the field by FC
Cincinnati medical staff and the full extent of the injury is yet to be determined.
“I don’t think it is as serious from the little information I got. It is his foot, he will get an x-
ray, but I am optimistic” FC Cincinnati head coach Pat Noonan.
